A new study was conducted which confirmed that there is a linkage between having a kidney stones with gallstones and vice versa.

It is a known fact that obesity, diabetes and having a generally unhealthy diet put people at risk for both kidney and gall stones. However, having both at the same time remains questionable since their stones were formed out of different origin wherein kidney stones are made of calcium and gallstones of cholesterol, most of the time.

In the study, the researchers gathered data from three different long-term studies conducted by medical professionals who then reported any new medical conditions every two years afterward. In total, more than 240,000 people were followed for between 14 and 24 years. In that point, there were about 5,100 new kidney stones diagnosed and almost 18,500 new cases of gallstones. Regardless of gender, age and race, people with history of gallstones were between 26 – 32 percent more likely to get a kidney stone than people who hadn’t ever had gallstones. Meanwhile, having the past history of kidney stones meant study participants was between 17 – 51 percent more likely to report a new gallstone.

Non-smokers hit menopause between age 46 and 51, on average, depending on the study population. In all but two of the studies, smokers were younger between 43 and 50 in totality. They also analyzed five other studies that used a cut-off age of 50 or 51 to group women into “early” and “late” menopause. Out of more than 43,000 women in that analysis, women who smoked were 43 percent more likely than nonsmokers to have early menopause.

According to the researchers, the results of the study give further evidence that smoking is significantly associated with earlier menopause and provide yet another justification for women to avoid this habit.
