Mental Issues Shown to Increase ER Visits among Children

A recent study was conducted which revealed that the increase in emergency room visits was to be blamed on the mental health issues of kids.

According to the researchers, among the psychiatric related problems that are mostly common referred to the hospitals were depression, anxiety and behavioral issues while with suicide attempts, drug use and alcohol problems are less often mentioned and the problem is to put the blame on the shortage of doctors who specializes in the said aspect in the medical world. They even pointed out that these patients were the ones to be dealt more since the cues that help doctors to diagnose their complaints are often imperceptible.

Another reason cited by the authors of the study that lead to the said increase is the effect of having public health insurance on a person’s access to outpatient mental health care. Most of the psychiatrists either don’t accept Medicaid and other public insurances, or are more hesitant to fit these patients into their schedule.
