The news source is Reuters and the study was conducted by Imperial College London and Hammersmith Hospital in the UK.

A new study was conducted which revealed that people who already had undergone gastric bypass surgery had the least tendency of being tempted to divulge unhealthy food choices compared to those who had gastric banding.

The two weight loss operations have a similar broad goal to reduce the stomach in size so people feel full even with less food eaten. In gastric bypass, the stomach is surgically cut and one end of it is rerouted to bypass part of the small intestine while in gastric banding, a silicone band is placed around the top of the stomach which reduces its capacity. Although gastric banding is more popular, previous researches have found that gastric bypass patients seem to lose more weight and lose it faster than banding patients.

In the study, the researchers analyzed 30 gastric bypass patients, 28 gastric banding patients and 20 people who did not favored any weight loss surgery at all. All the participants started out obese and the two surgery groups had lost an average of 28 percent amounts of body weight since their respective procedures. Since banding patients lose weight more slowly, those in this study had undergone their procedure an average of 18 months earlier, compared to the bypass patients at 10 months post-surgery. Then, the participants filled out an eating behavior questionnaire, and 20 people in each group underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while looking at pictures of food.

The results showed that among the significant differences in questionnaire responses, the gastric bypass patients reported having to restrict themselves from eating poorly. They also did less impulsive eating and less eating to boost their mood, or “emotional eating”. Those who underwent fMRI had not eaten overnight, and then viewed pictures of foods and ate ice cream during the brain scan. The gastric bypass patients rated the pictures of high-calorie foods as less appealing which showed lower brain activities than the gastric banding patients did.

According to the researchers, the feeling of fullness is brought about by the gut hormones being more released quickly in gastric bypass patients which influences their responses to food in a way the gastric banding patients don’t experience. In addition, they found out that the right surgery for people to undergo varies from one person to another that is why it is a must for medical professionals to delve into the cause of obesity in a possible patient as this greatly affects the outcome of what surgery to be conducted.

Therefore, the ability to screen patients properly has a great deal of impact on the success or failure of every weight loss surgery.

People who are undergoing surgeries must take all precautionary actions beforehand so that the outcome is ideal. However, nothing beats being prepared with a good health insurance plan. This post is based off of a story reported on WebMD.com and a study conducted by Cancer Registry of Norway.

A new study was conducted which confirmed that married people are more likely to survive cancer compared to those who remained single for life.

Marrying, for some, could mean the end of their joyous life while others pursue to tying the knot for innumerable reasons aside from love. However, in some studies, it was found out that aside from having a new partner in facing life’s challenges, being married could at least increase one’s survival chance with cancer.

In the study, the researchers tracked the number of cancer deaths for 13 common cancers, including breastprostate, malignant melanomacolon, and lung, in more than 440,000 Norwegian men and women from 1970 to 2007. It was found out that during that 40-year period, those never-married men and women were 18% and 17% respectively more likely to die from cancer than married men.  More recently during the 2005-2007 time period, never-married men were 35% and single ladies were 22% more likely to die from cancer.

According to the researchers, the differences in survival between unmarried and married people with cancer could possibly be explained by better general health at the time of diagnosis or better adherence to treatment regimes and follow-ups. They also added that the healthy lifestyle and amount of emotional support gotten from a partner makes the difference since having a partner that nudges to have regular clinic visits pushes the other half to be diagnosed and treated earlier. However, one weakness of the study is that researchers did not have enough information about unmarried people to know whether they were truly single or living with someone.

The news source is WebMd.com and the study was conducted by London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Queen Mary, University of London.

A new study was conducted which revealed that mobile phones have many species of bacteria lurking in its surfaces and crevices as a product of poor hand hygiene.

Mobile phones are almost always being carried everywhere including the visit to the toilet rooms wherein a number of species of bacteria like the E. coli lurk in all its corners that is why washing of the hands is a must.

In the study, researchers took 390 samples from cell phones and hands, which were then analyzed for germs. Also, the people were asked about their hand hygiene. The findings revealed that 92% of phones were contaminated with germs while 82% of hands had bacteria on them despite the majority of the respondents said they had washed their hands with soap.

According to the researchers, it is a shocking truth that people are unconsciously contaminating every surface being touched which eventually poorly affects everyone in one way or another. They pointed out the importance of hand washing as this not only stops the spread of the germs but as well as the spread of diseases brought by those bacteria. Furthermore, they concluded that educating the people with the proper hand hygiene will somehow solve this modern-day problem that is linked to the advancements of technology.

The news source is WebMD and the study was conducted by Children’s Mercy Promoting Health in Teens and Kids Weight Management Clinics in Kansas City, Mo.

A new study was conducted which revealed that most obese kids do not get proper follow-up visits from their pediatricians.

The rates of childhood obesity have more than tripled in the past 30 years. Today, one in three American kids and teens are overweight or obese. Diseases and conditions normally only seen in adults like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes are now increasingly being seen in children. Part of promoting health and managing weight in children play a major role in their increase risk of being obese.

In the study, researchers included information about 1,193 overweight and obese children aged 2 to 12 who were seen for well visits in 2010. It was found out that older kids were more likely to have a follow-up plan outlined by their doctor as were those children who are considered obese, when compared to children who are overweight.

According to the researchers, the reason why less clinic visits took place is that doctors don’t want to tell parents to make a follow-up visit in a month when they know that they will not be able to get an appointment anyway due to overscheduling. They also added that it should be the parent’s prerogative to ask from the doctors the obligatory steps to undertake because there’s ‘chubby babies are healthy babies’ mentality that still remains debatable.

In relation to the topic, it is important that parents and doctors alike work hand-in-hand in facing the obesity in children because it can become a burden if health complications arise. In same manner, getting your child health insurance coverage as early as now can prevent any medically-related expenses.
